Izmit, Gulf of

a gulf in the Sea of Marmara, on the northwest shores of Asia Minor (Turkey). Length, 52 km; width, 6 km; maximum depth, 183 m. The northern shore of the gulf is a health-resort area (the Anatolian Riviera). The city and port of İzmit is located in the apical part of the gulf.
