Khabibi

(pen name; real name unknown). Born circa 1470 in the village of Bargiushad; died 1520. Azerbaijani poet.

Khabibi was educated at the court of Sultan Yaqub (1478–90) and was “king of poets” at the court of Shah Ismail I Safavid. He spent the last years of his life in Turkey.

Khabibi’s ghazals are secular and humanistic in content. They are characterized by freshness of imagery, crispness of language, and emotionality of expression. About 40 of Khabibi’s works have survived. Highly educated for a man of his time, he continued the tradition of Nesimi and greatly influenced the work of a number of major writers, including Fizuli. Khabibi’s work played an important role in the development of Azerbaijani poetry.
