an urban-type settlement in Irkutsk Oblast, RSFSR, on the Kitoi River (a tributary of the Angara). Railroad station, 3.5 km north of the city of Angarsk. Kitoi is a base for shipping timber.


Kitoi

 

a river in the Buriat ASSR and in Irkutsk Oblast, RSFSR, a left tributary of the Angara. The Kitoi River measures 316 km long and drains an area of 9,190 sq km. It originates from two sources, the Samarta and the Urda-Ulzyta, in the Kitoi Gol’tsy (Vostochnyi Saian) and flows between the Kitoi Gol’tsy and the Tunkin Gol’tsy. In the lower course the valley is broad and marsh-ridden. The Kitoi is fed in various ways, but primarily by rain. The mean annual flow rate at the mouth is approximately 115 cu m/sec, with a maximum of 2,340 cu m/sec. The river freezes in the second half of October; the ice breaks up in late April or early May. The Kitoi is used for floating timber. The city of Angarsk is situated on the river.
