menstrual extraction

Fringe obstetrics
A type of abortion that consists of the suction extraction of an early (up to 8 weeks of gestation) conceptus, often performed by lay persons. While somewhat similar to an abortion performed by a physician, the procedure is not without danger and women so treated may not seek timely medical intervention when needed. As the data are anecdotal, claims for menstrual extraction’s success may be exaggerated and the real or potential complications (uterine perforation, ectopic pregnancy, gram-negative sepsis and continued pregnancy) minimised by its advocates.
Equipment
A sterile syringe, a rubber stopper, a one-way valve, plastic tubing and jars.

Vacuum or suction curettage of the uterus performed just before the date of the next menstrual period. The procedure ensures inducement of the menstrual period even though the uterus may contain a fertilized ovum. See also: extraction
