Mental Mediumship

Mental mediumship covers such phenomena as clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, clairalience/clairgustance, clairhambience, psychometry, glossolalia, inspirational speaking and writing, precognition and retrocognition. Such phenomena may or may not be produced while the medium is in trance.

It is not always easy to categorize whether a particular phenomenon falls under the heading of mental or physical mediumship. For example, automatism may be regarded as mental mediumship because even though the hand of the medium is utilized in producing the material, what is produced seems to come through a mental process. But it is spirit that controls the hand and therefore it might well be classed as physical mediumship. Similarly, table tipping and direct voice are difficult to categorize.

Bletzer defines mental mediumship as the use of “etheric world intelligences when performing mental psychic skills; intelligences use their energy and only the medium perceives (as opposed to physical mediumship in which the intelligences use the medium’s energy).”
