Oliver, Jack E.

Oliver, Jack E. (Ertle)

(1923– ) seismologist; born in Massillon, Ohio. He was an adviser to the president (1958–59) and the U.S. Air Force (1960–69), a member of the Atomic Energy Commission (1969–74), and the Irving Porter Church Professor of Engineering at Cornell University (1971). His seismic profiles of the eastern U.S.A. have supported his conviction that seismology is the key to obtaining new data on the earth's continental crust.
