The original town, now called Old Moshi and located nearby, was the capital of a 19th-century kingdom of the Chagga people and became (late 19th cent.) an administrative center under the Germans. In the 20th cent. the British moved Moshi to its present site.

Commercial and industrial center of an agricultural region producing coffee, tea, sugarcane, bananas, and livestock. Local industries include food, woodworking, textiles, and leather footwear. A sugar refinery is located in Arusha Chini, near Moshi.
