[′nir‚shȯr ′kə·rənt ‚sis·təm] (oceanography) A current system, caused mainly by wave action in and near the breaker zone, which contains four elements: the shoreward mass transport of water; longshore currents; seaward return flow, including rip currents; and the longshore movement of the expanded heads of rip currents.
