Nyaneka

 

(Vanhaneca, Munhaneca, Ovanyaneka), a people in Angola, inhabiting the territory to the east of the city of Moçâmedes. Their population is approximately 250,000 (1967, estimate). The Nyaneka language belongs to the western group of the Bantu languages. Most of the Nyaneka maintain ancient traditional beliefs; some are Christians. Their main occupation is hoe farming (corn, millet, and sorghum). The Nyaneka also raise cattle. Some of the Nyaneka work on plantations owned by Europeans.
