McCawley, Charles G. (Grymes)

(1827–91) Marine officer; born in Philadelphia. He took part in the capture of Mexico City in 1847, and, during the Civil War, in the destruction of Fort Sumter and the seizure of forts Wagner and Gregg near Charleston, S.C. His appointment as Marine Corps colonel commandant in 1876 capped a long and exemplary service career.
