Skikda is an industrial and transportation center in the northeastern part of the country. It has a railroad station and a port on the Mediterranean Sea. The port, which has a freight turnover of approximately 1 million tons (1971), exports petroleum, vegetables, and subtropical fruits. Skikda has food-processing enterprises, including a fish cannery, and enterprises of the petroleum and chemical industries, including a gas-liquefaction plant, with a capacity of 3.8 billion cu m, and the largest chemical combine in North Africa for the production of plastics. In 1976 construction was under way on an oil refinery with a projected annual capacity of 7.5 million tons, a new port to accommodate tankers with a displacement of 100,000-125,000 tons, and a steam electric power plant. Skikda is the terminus of the Mezdar-Skikda oil pipeline (640 km long).
