Location:Eastern Kentucky. Accessible by I-75 and I-64. Nearby cities/towns include Lexington, London, Morehead, and Stanton.
Facilities:20 campgrounds, 3 group camps, picnic sites, swimming beaches, marinas, boat ramps, trails.
Activities:Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, swimming, water-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing, spelunking.
Special Features:Rugged land characterized by steep slopes, narrow valleys, and cliffs. Attractions include Lake Cumberland, Cave Run Lake, Laurel River Lake, and Red River Gorge Geological Area, containing more than 100 major natural arches and unusual vegetation. Cumberland Falls and Natural Bridge state resort parks (see separate entries in Kentucky State Parks section) are within the proclamation boundary of the forest.
