Voinov, Aleksandr

Born Nov. 20 (Dec. 3), 1902, in Kolpino, in present-day Leningrad Oblast. Soviet architect. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (1953). Honored Artist of the Byelorussian SSR (1948). Member of the CPSU since 1927.

Voinov studied at the Moscow Higher State Art and Technical Studio and the Higher State Art and Technical Institute (1924-29) under A. V. Shchusev, I. A. Golosov, and D. F. Fridman. Since 1930 he has worked in Byelorussia. During the years 1941-49 he was president of the board of the Architects’ Union of the Byelorussian SSR. He has taught at the Byelorussian Polytechnic Institute in Minsk since 1947 (as a professor since 1951). Voinov’s works include the Republic Party School (1937-38), Hotel Belarus’ (1938), and the building of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Byelorussia (1940-47, with V. N. Varaksin), all in Minsk; the Hotel Dnieper in Mogilev (1938—40, with A. P. Bregman); and the administration building in Molodechno (1956-59, with Ia. A. Pechkin). Voinov won the State Prize of the Byelorussian SSR in 1968. He has also been awarded three orders and a medal.
