Slonim

a city (since 1940) under oblast jurisdiction in Grodno Oblast, Byelorussian SSR; located in the valley of the Shchary River, a left tributary of the Neman (Nemunas) River. Railroad station on the Baranovichi-Volkovysk line. Population, 33,700 (1975). Slonim has paper-and-cardboard and meatpacking combines, a bakery, plants for motor-vehicle and engine repairs, a flax-processing mill, a winery, and a plant for the production of powdered nonfat milk. The Tekstil’shchik Factory produces textiles, and there are factories for the manufacture of furniture and artware. A spinning mill for worsted yarn is under construction (1975). Slonim also has a people’s amateur theater and a museum of local lore. [23–1747–]
