Selznick, Philip

(1919– ) sociologist; born in Newark, N.J. A Columbia University Ph.D., he joined the faculty of the University of California: Berkeley (1952), where he chaired the Center for the Study of Law and Society (1961–72). He studied the sociology of large organizations and of law. His many books include the much revised Sociology (coauthored, 1955), a standard textbook.
