smoothness conditions smoothness conditions[′smüth·nəs kən‚dish·ənz] (fluid mechanics) Two conditions that must be satisfied by bodies studied in slender body theory: (1) the rate of change of the angle between the tangent plane to the body and the direction of the motion, evaluated along this direction, must be small and of the same order as the ratio of the maximum thickness of the body to its length; (2) the curvature of any section of the body in a plane normal to the direction of motion must be of the same order as the reciprocal of the maximum diameter of the section, at all points where the section is convex outward. |
