Stalproekt

(full name, State Union Institute for the Design of Steel-casting and Rolling Production Units for Ferrous Metallurgy), an institute founded in Moscow in 1924 on the initiative of V. E. Grum-Grzhimailo. Until 1930 the institute was known as the State Bureau for Metallurgical and Heat-engineering Design.

Stal’proekt developed an integrated construction plan for the Kuznetsk Metallurgical Combine, including a design for the combine’s furnace system and separate shops. It also produced a layout for the separate shops and all the furnaces at the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine. Designs for the furnaces of all the metallurgical plants and many of the machine-building and defense plants built during the early five-year plans came from the institute, as did designs for various types of rolling mills and other production units.

In the years since 1940, Stal’proekt has designed installations for the continuous casting of steel, large-capacity open-hearth furnaces, basic oxygen furnaces, two-bath furnaces, and new types of heating and heat-treating furnaces for Soviet and foreign plants. The institute has made important contributions to the theory of heat engineering as it applies to furnaces and has helped develop the scientific basis of furnace design. Stal’proekt is the principal institute for the design of furnace units used to heat metal prior to rolling and heat treatment. The proceedings of the institute have been published since 1961. Stal’proekt has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1974).
