A term coined in the early 1970s by French philosopher Henri Lefebvre; meant to describe areas that combined intensive agricultural uses with suburban living sites and some industrialization.In much of the world except the United States,it is used generally to describe areas that derive economic benefit from the nearby city, but which maintain the ability for people to grow foodstuffs on their own land for personal consumption and minor amounts of sales in the city.In the United States,it is meant to be synonymous with exurban—another component of suburban sprawl, being estate-sized lots usually with ancillary country clubs, located past the suburbs and before the country.
