Tiutiunnik, Grigorii

Born May 6, 1920, in the village of Shilovtsy, Poltava Oblast; died Aug. 29, 1961, in L’vov. Soviet Ukrainian writer.

After graduating from the University of Kharkov in 1946, Tiutiunnik worked as a teacher. His first published work appeared in 1940. He is the author of a collection of short stories, The Plowed-up Borderlands (1951), and of the novellas Through Clouds the Sun Will Shine (1956; Russian translation, 1959) and The Bug River Is Roaring (1965). Tiutiunnik’s novel The Whirlpool (books 1–2, 1960–62; Russian translation, 1962) was awarded the T. G. Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR in 1963. The novel describes life in a Ukrainian village in the decade preceding the war and tells of the people’s struggle against the fascist German aggressors during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. Tiutiunnik’s collected poems were published under the title Crane Springs (1963). His works have appeared in translation in the various national languages of the USSR.
