Technological Effectiveness of a Design

Technological Effectiveness of a Design

the aggregate of a product’s design properties that ensure manufacture, repair, and maintenance by means of the most efficient engineering in comparison with designs of the same type and purpose, under the same manufacturing and operating conditions, and with the same quality characteristics.

The use of efficient technology involves optimum expenditures of labor, materials, equipment, and time in the technological preparation of production and the process of manufacture, operation and repairs, including preparation of the product for use, inspection of the product’s operability, and preventive maintenance. The conditions of manufacture or repair are determined by the type of production (whether piece-work or lot production), by the production organization and specialization, and by the program and number of production runs. These conditions are connected with the development of technological effectiveness aimed at reducing the labor intensiveness of manufacturing or repairing the product and at reducing the product’s cost.

Base indicators are used to evaluate one design that is representative of a group of products possessing common design features. In a comparative, quantitative evaluation of design versions for the same product, the same characteristics of technological effectiveness and the same methods of determining the characteristics are used.

The work required to ensure the technological effectiveness of a design in all production stages is established by the Uniform System of Technological Preparation for Production (ESTPP).
