Storting


Storting

(stôr`tĭng), national parliament of Norway, dating from 1814. Its members are elected by direct universal suffrage for a four-year term, and representation is proportional. The Storting elects one fourth of its members to form the Lagting, or upper house, the remainder constituting the Odelsting or lower house, in which all bills must originate. Ministers may attend the Storting but may not vote.

It is headed by a president and vice-president, who with the presidents and vice-presidents of the Storting’s two houses, the Lagting and the Odelsting, form the presidential council. The Storting approves the state budget, grants loans and credit, passeslaws, ratifies international treaties, and exercises control over the government.
