Plasseya village in Bengal, India. It is near the site of the battle of Plassey, which took place on July 23, 1757. On that date, a detachment of 800 English soldiers and 2,200 sepoys commanded by R. Clive routed the 68,000-man army of the nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daula. After the battle, Clive placed on the nawab’s throne the traitor Mir Jafar, who had commanded the main Bengal forces. In effect, Clive subjugated Bengal to the authority of the British East India Company.
