specialised services

specialised services

Those advanced services which are provided in a tertiary centre in the UK to a patient referred forward by a consultant at a District General Hospital (DGH), because the patient has a complicated or rare condition or one which the referring hospital trust is not equipped or staffed to manage. Specialised services cover a wider geographic area and have a greater population base than do specialty services provided by a single Health Authority. Specialised services need a “critical mass” of patients to make treatment centres cost effective.
