The Rhaetian Alps extend approximately 140 km from southwest to northeast. Three isolated massifs are frequently included in the Rhaetian Alps: Bernina (elevations to 4,049 m), Orties, and Adamello. The mountains are composed primarily of limestones, marls, and dolomites and other crystalline rocks. Mountain glacial relief predominates. There are hardwood forests to elevations of 800 m, mixed and coniferous forests to 2,250 m, and subalpine and alpine meadows and shrubs to 2,700 m. Higher there are perpetual snows and glaciers. The Rhaetian Alps are a popular center for tourism and mountain climbing. |
