Rice Institute

 

(full name, All-Union Scientific Research Rice Institute of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences). The Institute of Rice works on problems of the distribution of rice plantings in the USSR, the construction of rice irrigation systems, selection, seed production, and ricecultivation technology and on the improvement of rice-growing machines. It was organized in 1966 to replace the Kuban’ Rice Experiment Station. In 1975 the institute had the following departments: selection and seed production; irrigated agriculture; mechanization, hydrotechnology, and land reclamation; physiology and biochemistry; technological evaluation of grain; protection of rice; agrochemistry; economics; scientific and technical information; and patenting. The Institute of Rice has a base in Astrakhan Oblast, a base near Kiliia in Odessa Oblast, and a stock seed-production farm in Krasnodar Krai. By 1974 the following varieties of rice developed at the institute had been regionalized: Dubovskii 129, Kuban’ 3, Krasnodar 424, and Vros 3716. The institute publishes Nauchnye trudy (Scientific Works; since 1970).
