Sievers, Wilhelm

Born Dec. 3, 1860, in Hamburg; died June 11, 1921, in Giessen. German geographer specializing in regional geography.

Sievers became a professor at the University of Wiirzburg in 1891 and at the J. Liebig University of Giessen in 1903. From 1884 to 1886 and in 1892 and 1893 he traveled in Venezuela and Colombia and studied the northwestern and Caribbean Andes. Sievers was editor of the six-volume Universal Geography, whose publication began in 1891 (Russian translation, 1902–08). For the second edition of this work he wrote “Asia” (1904; Russian translation, 1908) and “South and Central America” (1903; Russian translation, 1908).
