(also kôr′thō-vä) A city of southern Spain on the Guadalquivir River east-northeast of Seville. Probably established by Carthaginians, it was later ruled by Romans and Visigoths. During the ninth and tenth centuries, as the seat of the Moorish caliphate, Córdoba was one of the largest cities in the world and was renowned as a cultural and intellectual center.
