Minding, Ferdinand Gotlibovich

 

Born Jan. 11 (23), 1806, in Kalisz; died May 1 (13), 1885, in Tartu. Russian geometer. Honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1879; corresponding member, 1864).

Of German origin, Minding graduated from the University of Berlin in 1827. In 1843 he was appointed a professor at the University of Dorpat (Tartu). His most important works were on the integration of first-order differential equations, on the theory of surfaces and curves lying on surfaces, and particularly on the theory of surfaces with constant curvature.
