Cananea
a city in northwest Mexico, in the state of Sonora. It is situated at an altitude of more than 1, 500 m. Population, 21,000 (1960). A railroad branch links it with US railroads. It is a center for copper mining and has a copper-smelting plant (40, 000 tons of crude copper annually) belonging to Anaconda, a US company.
