Daisetsu-zan

Daisetsu-zan

(dīsā`tso͞o-zäN), group of volcanic peaks, central Hokkaido, Japan, rising to 7,513 ft (2,290 m) at Asahi-dake. They are part of Daisetsu-zan National Park (895 sq mi/2,318 sq km; est. 1934), the largest national park in Japan.

a national park of Japan, located in the central part of the island of Hokkaido. Daisetsu-zan covers an area of 231,929 hectares, of which 35,193 are occupied by five preserves. Created in 1934, the park offers a combination of arctic and alpine flora as well as manifestations of volcanic activity (hot springs). Japanese black and brown bears inhabit the park.
