Romanones, Count

 

(full name Alvaro Figueroa y Torres). Born Aug. 9, 1863, in Madrid; died there Sept. 11, 1950. Spanish state figure, historian, landowner, and mining industrialist; count from 1909.

Romanones was a member of the government many times. He was premier in 1912 and 1913, 1915–17, and 1918 and 1919. He retired from politics after the beginning of the fascist revolt in July 1936. Romanones wrote on the history of Spain during the 19th and 20th centuries from the point of view of a liberal monarchist. In 1942 he became a member of the Royal Spanish Academy.
