Christopher of Mytilene

 

Born circa 1000; died circa 1050. Byzantine poet.

Christopher of Mytilene’s poetic works include versions of biblical stories and sententiae. He also produced two church calendars in verse. In his secular poetry, he vividly describes daily life and provides satirical portraits of his contemporaries. Christopher was one of the first Byzantine writers to strive for individualization of character.
