Boris Petrovich Zakharchenia

Zakharchenia, Boris Petrovich

Born May 1, 1928, in Orsha, in what is now Vitebsk Oblast. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1963.

In 1952, Zakharchenia graduated from Leningrad State University and joined the staff of the Physicotechnical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1972 he became a professor at the Leningrad Electrical Engineering Institute.

Zakharchenia’s main works deal with the optics of solids. Zakharchenia discovered and investigated magnetoabsorption oscillations associated with optical transitions between Landau levels in crystals. He also did research on the optical orientation of electrons and nuclei in semiconductors and on metal-semiconductor phase transitions as applied to problems of optoelectronics.

Zakharchenia received the Lenin Prize in 1966 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1976.
