Clare’s Law

The popular name for legislation in the UK giving people the right to ask police if their partner has a history of domestic violence, and police the option to inform potential victims.
The law was named after Clare Wood, who was strangled and set afire by her ex-boyfriend, George Appleton, who went on the run before hanging himself. The law would increase transparency of those with a history of violence, repeated harassment, threats and so on.
Clare’s Law programme tests the:
• Right to ask—Triggered by a request by a member of the public; and
• Right to know—Triggered by police who proactively disclose the information to protect a potential victim.
