Click the link for more information. was born in the city. Goria city in the Georgian SSR, at the confluence of the Bol’shaia Liakhvi and Kura rivers. Railroad station 76 km northwest of Tbilisi. A railroad spur runs 33 km from Gori to the city of Tskhinvali. Population. 48,000 (1970; 10,200 in 1926). Gori has a cotton-textile combine and instrument-building and railroad-tie treatment plants, fruit and vegetable canneries, wineries, and a meat-packing plant. There is a pedagogical institute, an agricultural technicum, medical and musical schools, and a drama theater. There is also a historical-ethnographic museum. It is the birthplace of J. V. Stalin; the J. V. Stalin House Museum is now located there. Gori was first mentioned in historical chronicles in the early seventh century. It has been a city since 1801. The ruins of the medieval fortress of Goristsikhe are located on a low hill in Gori. GORI
