Gori

a city in the Georgian SSR, at the confluence of the Bol’shaia Liakhvi and Kura rivers. Railroad station 76 km northwest of Tbilisi. A railroad spur runs 33 km from Gori to the city of Tskhinvali. Population. 48,000 (1970; 10,200 in 1926).

Gori has a cotton-textile combine and instrument-building and railroad-tie treatment plants, fruit and vegetable canneries, wineries, and a meat-packing plant. There is a pedagogical institute, an agricultural technicum, medical and musical schools, and a drama theater. There is also a historical-ethnographic museum. It is the birthplace of J. V. Stalin; the J. V. Stalin House Museum is now located there.

Gori was first mentioned in historical chronicles in the early seventh century. It has been a city since 1801. The ruins of the medieval fortress of Goristsikhe are located on a low hill in Gori.
