Tamla Motown|ˈtæmlə ˈməʊtaʊn| The name of two U.S. record labels, Tamla and Motown, launched in 1960 by Berry Gordy Jr., used attrib. and absol. to designate a style of music characterized by a heavy beat and influenced by gospel music, which was made popular by the Black artists he employed.
