(Linnæus 1748); derivation not stated.] A genus of neuropterous insects, the type of a family Panorpidæ, taken by some as an order Panorpatæ, the scorpion-flies. Hence paˈnorpate, † paˈnorpatous adjs., of or pertaining to the scorpion-flies as an order; paˈnorpian, paˈnorpine adjs., of or pertaining to the genus Panorpa; paˈnorpid, an insect of the family Panorpidæ; paˈnorpoid a., resembling or related to the scorpion-flies.
