Excommunication from the Synagogue.
1829H. H. Milman Hist. Jews III. 145 For more heinous offences, and against contumacious delinquents, the more terrific Cherem, or the still more fatal Shammata, the excommunication, was proclaimed. 1903Jewish Encycl.
