chlorolabe, n. Physiol.|ˈklɔːrəʊleɪb| [f. chloro-1 + -labe, f. Gr. root λαβ- to take, seize.] A green-sensitive pigment present in the cones of the retina. Cf. *cyanolabe n., *erythrolabe n.
1958W. A. H. Rushton in Nature 13 Sept. 691/1 This latter pigment may be named ‘erythrolabe’ (= red taking), the protanope pigment ‘chlorolabe’, [etc.]. 1959[see erythrolabe n.]. 1963Jrnl. Physiol. CLXVIII. 358 The ‘green pigment’ of colour vision is not that which would look green if we could extract it, for in that case green rays would be transmitted unabsorbed and without effect. Quite the contrary, it is the pigment which catches green—chlorolabe. 1975Sci. Amer. Mar. 71/3 D. E. Mitchell and I applied the same test to see whether or not the cone pigments chlorolabe or erythrolabe in the dichromat are the pigments of daylight vision in the protanope or the deuteranope. |
