1. Arch. The springing-line of an arch; the sloping surface on which either extremity of an arch rests; a course of stone or brickwork, an iron plate, etc., immediately supporting the foot of an arch.
1703Moxon Mech. Exerc. 279 According to the breadth of the Piers between the Windows, so ought the Skew-back or Sommering of the Arch to be.
