1891 W. Waagen in Palæontologica Indica 13th Ser. 4 ii. 241 The term ‘carboniferous’ cannot here be used again, as with this the old confusion would again be sanctioned; and yet the most characteristic feature of the two systems is the frequent occurrence of coal-seams. Thus, I venture to propose for the whole, for the Carboniferous and Permian systems together, the name of ‘Anthracolithic Epoch’.
