Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French discothèque.
Etymology: < French discothèque library of music records which can be listened to on-site (1928), venue where recorded music is played for dancing (1952 or earlier) < disc disc n. + -o- -o- connective + -thèque (in bibliothèque bibliothèque n.). Compare slightly later disco n.1, which is now the more usual word.
