释义

Aaron's bellsn.

Brit. /ˌɛːrənz ˈbɛlz/, /ˌɛːrn̩z ˈbɛlz/, U.S. /ˈɛrənz ˈbɛlz/
Forms: see Aaron n.2 and bell n.1
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Aaron , bell n.1
Etymology: < the genitive of the name of Aaron (see Aaron n.2) + the plural of bell n.1In sense 1 with allusion to Aaron's ephod as described in Exodus 28:33–35:1611 Bible (King James) Exod. xxviii. 33–35 And beneath vpon the hemme of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blew, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hemme thereof, and belles of gold betweene them round about. A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, vpon the hemme of the robe round about. And it shall be vpon Aaron, to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in vnto the holy place before the Lord, and when he commeth out, that he die not.
1. Originally: the small bells attached to the hem of Aaron's ephod (see quot. 1611 in etymology). In later use also: small bells used as Torah scroll ornaments. Also figurative and in extended use, usually as a symbol of the authority or influence of Aaron or the Jewish priesthood. Now rare.
