(a) an antbird of Central and South America, esp. any of the ground-feeding antbirds belonging to the genera Formicarius and Chamaeza (to which the family Formicariidae is now usually restricted; cf. antbird n. at ant n.1 Compounds 2); (b) either of two birds of the genus Neocossyphus (family Turdidae) of forests in central Africa.Some 19th-cent. authors used the name for broad groups encompassing not only antbirds (now family Thamnophilidae) but also pittas (family Pittidae; cf. quot. 1894).
