Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: geo- comb. form, gnostic adj.
Etymology: < geo- comb. form + gnostic adj., after German geognostisch (1787 or earlier) or post-classical Latin geognosticus (1761 in scientia geognostica ). Compare French géognostique (1795 or earlier; probably after German). Compare slightly earlier geognostical adj., and also geognosy n.
Now chiefly historical.
Of or relating to geognosy; geological.
