Gold beaten into a thin sheet; (in later use also) an imitation of this. In later use also spec.: gold-coloured metal rolled into a thin, flexible sheet, now often used for packaging food.In technical use in the decorative arts, gold-foil denotes a thicker sheet than gold-leaf (gold leaf n.).
