Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: gyno- comb. form, -ander comb. form.
Etymology: < gyno- comb. form + -ander comb. form.In sense 1 probably after post-classical Latin gynander (1740 or earlier) or French gynandre (1755 or earlier), both apparently in turn after scientific Latin Gynandria , former class name (see gynandrian adj.); compare earlier gynandrous adj. and gynandrian adj. Compare also monander n. and polyander n. In sense 2 after gynandrous adj.; compare earlier androgyne n. In sense 3 after gynandromorphous adj., gynandromorph adj., etc.
1. A plant of the former Linnaean class Gynandria, in which the stamens and pistil are partly fused (as in orchids). Obsolete. rare.
