Etymology: < ichthyo- comb. form + Latin oleum oil. (But perhaps suggested by ichthyolite.)
Medicine.
A brownish-yellow syrupy liquid of disagreeable odour, obtained by the dry distillation of bituminous rocks containing remains of fossil fishes; used as a remedy in skin diseases. Also, the dark, viscous liquid obtained by sulphonating the distillate and neutralizing the product with ammonia, in which form the substance has been most commonly employed (see quot. 1950).Ichthyol has been registered as a proprietary name.
