Etymology: < im- prefix1 + either mask n.3 or mask v.4 Compare Italian immascherare (first half of the 16th cent.), and also Middle French emmasqué (16th cent.).With the β. forms compare in- prefix3. With the γ. forms compare en- prefix1.
