Horticulture.
A low-growing annual plant with fleshy greyish-green leaves and brightly coloured daisy-like flowers, Dorotheanthus bellidiformis (family Aizoaceae), native to the Western Cape, South Africa, and widely cultivated elsewhere, esp. as a bedding plant.The name first appears in the catalogue of the seed company owned by Samuel Ryder (1859–1936), English seedsman and golf enthusiast (see quot. 1932).This plant has also been known as Mesembryanthemum criniflorum and Cleretum bellidiforme. Many of the Livingstone daisies in cultivation may be hybrids with the closely related species D. gramineus.

1932 Ryders' Seeds (heading) The Livingstone Daisy... (Mesembryanthemum criniflorum)... After three or four years of careful trial we have great pleasure in introducing this interesting flower, which is entirely new to English gardens. This flower was collected for us at Kuruman, on the borders of the great Kalahari Desert, in Bechuanaland. It will be remembered that Dr. Livingstone, the eminent missionary and traveler first settled at Kuruman, and we have, therefore, associated his name with this lovely flower .
